Free IVF results in very high success rate within 4-6 years By Sarah Guy 24 January 2011 Fertility and Sterility 2010; 95: 568-72 MedWire News: A study in Israel shows that infertile couples with access to unlimited IVF treatment have an almost 90 percent chance of achieving a live birth within 4 to 6 years. The high success rate is the result of very few couples dropping-out of continuous treatment before achieving a live birth, comment the researchers. “The situation in Israel is unique because IVF treatments are fully covered by the national health insurance,” comment Yechezkel Lande (Rabin Medical Center, Petach-Tikva) and colleagues, who evaluated the outcome of multiple IVF cycles to see whether national expenditure beyond 3-6 cycles could be justified. During a follow-up period of 5-7 years, 120 (89.6 percent) of 134 couples in the study gave birth to a live child. Approximately 62.7 percent of patients achieved this live birth within the first year of follow-up, while 85.1 and 88.8 percent achieved it within 4 and 6 years, respectively. Of the 14 couples who did not have a child, Lande et al report that four are still continuing IVF treatment. The remaining 10 couples either adopted (n = 5), got divorced and stopped treatment (n = 2), or chose to remain childless (n = 3). “In a cost-free environment, young women beginning IVF treatments can be reassured that they have a very high chance… of achieving a live birth within 4 to 6 years,” concludes the research team …
